- Growing up watching this, I've always had a soft spot for the adventure and the sheer amount of imagination Spielberg puts into it. Neverland looks fantastic, from the scenery and elaborate sets to the costumes, which really help sell the whole fantasy world. Robin Williams is great with the young cast, too. Their genuine affection for him comes across, making the Lost Boys' idolization of Peter feel all the more believable. The cast is stacked, but Dustin Hoffman steals the show as Hook. He's theatrical, funny and properly menacing, and clearly having a blast with the role. There's a lovely story underneath all the spectacle about growing up and losing touch with your childhood, which hits a little harder when you've actually grown up with the film. I know Tinker Bell's feelings for Peter go back to the original novel, but something about the way they're portrayed here feels a bit weird and awkward. Julia Roberts doesn't really work in the role, although the character isn't particularly well written to begin with. Her performance and costume are also so theatrical that she feels like she's wandered in from a stage production. The film could stand to lose some of its running time, and the broader comedy doesn't always land, but there's too much charm and creativity here for those issues to drag it down. Spielberg manages to make this a genuinely touching adventure without losing the fun, and the nostalgia only adds to its appeal. It's not without its flaws, but it's still a wonderful adaptation, with Hoffman being an absolute highlight.
- Hook is a joyful, imaginative adventure that reminds us why growing up doesn’t mean leaving childhood behind. Robin Williams brings warmth and heart to a wonderfully human Peter Pan, while Dustin Hoffman’s Captain Hook is deliciously theatrical and unforgettable. The film overflows with colour, magic, and emotion, blending humour with a surprisingly tender message about family, memory, and believing in yourself. It’s a timeless feel-good movie that captures the wonder of Neverland and leaves you smiling long after the credits roll.
- A genuine masterpiece and one of Spielberg’s best films. It’s a shame that critics attacked it simply for a controversy Julia Roberts had going on at the time the film released. The fact that the movie made nearly 5x its budget back (making over 300 million at the box office, all the way back in 1991), and is still held in very high regard by viewers today, is a testament to how great this Robin Williams classic is.
