Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, to kill again.
- Louis Alexander4. august 2025I've watched this so many times I've lost count. I own it and re-watch it on Halloween night every year, because it never gets old. In my opinion, it's the perfect formula for a horror movie, frightening and tense without jump scares every 30 seconds, properly violent and gory without overly-long scenes of the gore, funny without being over-the top. And finally, Jame Lee Curtis and the man who plays Michael play their roles perfectly. I've seen every single sequel and they are okay, but this one, in my opinion, is as close to perfect as you could possibly get from a horror/slasher movie.
- KGM SOSA7. oktober 2025John Carpenter’s Halloween is a classic for many & while I respect its legacy as a 70s slasher pioneer, my experience was very mixed. What worked for me: The strongest redeeming quality was its nostalgic aura. Everything screamed 70s in the best way possible: the rotary phones, the cars, the sound quality, the cheesy dialogue & lingo, & of course the legendary synth-heavy score. I’m a sucker for that era’s horror/slasher vibe, & this movie nails the aesthetic. Michael Myers’ introduction as a now-iconic character also deserves recognition. On atmosphere & style alone, Halloween had an easy 8–9/10 in its hands. Where it fell apart: Unfortunately, the characters (especially Laurie) dragged this down hard. I don’t mind suspension of disbelief (it’s a slasher after all), but the decision-making here crosses from “horror logic” into flat-out lazy writing. Characters constantly act in ways no rational person ever would & it becomes infuriating rather than suspenseful. • Laurie repeatedly incapacitates Michael by barely inflicting enough damage to even hurt a frail kitten, only to turn her back, throw her weapon away & collapse in tears while he inevitably gets up again. • Despite knowing she’s being stalked, she still investigates a pitch-black, silent house where her friends are clearly missing loudly calling out instead of being cautious, effectively walking into the killer’s hands. • Other characters refuse to even turn on lights while nervously creeping around eerie homes, squinting into the dark like electricity bills were too high in 1978 (they weren’t). Moments like this piled up until I was literally shouting at the screen, wishing the main character dead out of sheer frustration. Btw that’s coming from someone who almost always scores movies 9s & 10s; So a 6 from me is harsh. Final thoughts: The first 3/4 of Halloween felt like an easy classic, but the last act knocked it down several pegs. Still, I liked it enough that I can see myself revisiting it & maybe climbing back up to a 7–8/10 once the irritation wears off. For now though, I can only call it a flawed classic, important for what it did for the genre, but frustrating in execution.
