- Patrick Wai13. oktober 2026Sam Raimi basically created a poor man’s Batman, except instead of a billionaire with a cave full of gadgets, we get a horribly disfigured scientist with anger issues and the ability to manufacture disguises. Liam Neeson must have had an absolute field day playing Peyton. He gets to be romantic, tragic, frightening, sympathetic and completely unhinged, sometimes within the same scene. Frances McDormand is equally good and gives the craziness some emotional grounding. Larry Drake is also terrific as Durant, playing the villain with just the right amount of menace. What I really liked is that Raimi takes the superhero origin seriously. There aren’t a bunch of stupid jokes or unnecessary side stories constantly interrupting the tragedy. Peyton loses his face, his life and increasingly his humanity, and the movie actually lets that matter. The story itself is pretty straightforward, basically revenge with disguises, but the character makes it more interesting. Darkman doesn’t have Batman’s money or gadgets. His superpower is essentially science, fake faces and being extremely pissed off. The music occasionally threw me, though. At times it sounded like something from a Disney YA adventure or Indiana Jones, which felt strangely upbeat compared with what was happening onscreen. It’s easy to imagine this having been the beginning of a larger theatrical franchise. The character certainly had enough potential for it. Pulpy and occasionally ridiculous, but unlike a lot of comic-book movies from this period, it takes the character seriously even when the filmmaking gets wild. Straightforward, stylish, well acted and memorable.
- Richard21. april 2026I first saw Darkman on a VHS rental, one of those tapes you pick up without knowing exactly what you’re getting into and then realize halfway through that you’ve stumbled onto something wild. Sam Raimi mixes superhero pulp, horror, and his trademark chaotic energy into a film that feels like it’s constantly teetering between tragedy and comicbook madness. Liam Neeson goes all in as Peyton Westlake, a scientist turned disfigured vigilante who can mimic anyone’s face for 99 minutes at a time. It’s a ridiculous premise, but the movie treats it with just enough sincerity to make it work. W hile Raimi fills the rest with exaggerated villains, twisted humor and those unmistakable kinetic camera moves. It’s rough around the edges, loud and sometimes completely unhinged, exactly the kind of movie that sticks with you because you didn’t expect it to hit as hard as it does. Darkman feels like a VHS discovery in the best way: strange, bold and impossible to forget once you’ve seen it.
- tokethaninja17. desember 2025the perfect film. unpredictable, shocking, subversive. great score. great acting. amazing shots. impressive use of cgi and greenscreen for its budget, era and genre. amazing practical effects and props. doesnt take itself too seriously, which makes the parts one would normally find hamfisted or corny into something more fun and interesting. again, it is the perfect film.
- Johann18. august 2026What? This is the weirdest, most unexpected movie I've watched in a long time. I enjoyed it. I want to talk to someone about it. I love how Smiley holds shoots his machine gun like a lunatic. And Turner's weird thing with decapitated fingers and that his weapon of choice is a grenade launcher that he sometimes fires out of helicopters. I laughed when Peyton mumbled "clever" to himself after figuring out that he could mirror the right side of his face. This is the dumbest genius scientist ever. The "science tech" is awesome. But what a waste. My experience was like watching an even more depraved Robocop movie. This movie is going for a certain vibe and it succeeded hard.

Raimi aptly decided to forgo the two previous entries into the genre and relied much more heavily on the superheros pulp tradition, creating a flawed yet endearing and timeless piece of enlightened trash.
