First time I've been left shocked by a 1930s B&W movie since I was a kid and watched Frankenstein over 40 years ago! Lately, I've been downloading older movies I've never seen from the Internet Archive and this was one of those. The opening scene describes it as being an anti child marriage piece which seemingly was an issue in some areas of the US at the time. The film progresses with a teacher leading the charge against child marriage in the area where it's still common much to the chargrin of the locals who intervene in violent ways to put a stop to her crusade. Then adult nudity starts to appear and later some what at first appeared to be questionable scenes involving a minor. More on that later. I honestly didn't think I would see this in an almost 90 year old American film given the known puritanical nature of the US at that time in particular. Anyways I stopped the movie and looked it up to see what the hell I was watching and if I wanted to continue. It turns out that the movie is based on a real marriage that took place in Pennsylvania in 1937 between a 9 yr old child and 22 yr old man who lived and stayed together until their deaths in the early 2000s. The actress (Shirley Mills) who plays the titular child bride, in later life attended Nostalgia Film conventions to sign autographs and sell copies of the film etc. is on the record as saying, at those conventions, that a body double was used for the nude scenes in the lake and I've no reason to doubt her. Anyways as for the movie itself, it's bearable without being great, the marriage scenes are disturbing as was meant to be the case given the opening message of the film and the added knowledge of it being based on a real case from just a year prior to the film being produced, made me want to finish it. It's not a classic by any means and not something I'll envisage myself ever watching again but the story itself was told in a way that was tolerable and the real history of the film's tale does add further interest. Be warned though, don't go in naive like I did expecting this to be a wholesome B&W 1930s movie as that is not the case and if you're offended by nudity avoid it! I'm European, so used to it, but for others it may be too much. For anyone seeking to watch this movie for other nefarious motives, the confirmation by the actress of the use of the body double should put an end to that!
