At the same time, this is an often-insane dark comedy that kept me on the edge of my seat and provided one of the most fascinating experiences of the year. Lanthimos is in his bag with the visuals, cinematography, and ability to get the best out of two top-tier actors. Where we ultimately wind up will frustrate some, but the way this film approaches the journey was far more entertaining than even I expected.

Plemons and Stone bouncing off each other is pure pleasure from their deadpan volleys to the way each scene seems to tilt depending on who’s holding the power in the moment. I’m so glad I caught this in a theater, because it looks fantastic. The production design and those slightly skewed Yorgos compositions just pop on a big screen. And I loved that ending. From the moment Plemons teleports to the final shot, it’s Yorgos fully speaking my language. It’s strange, playful, and weirdly triumphant.

- Cinema 4707. mars 2026This is the second collaboration between Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos and American actor Emma Stone. Their previous work, Poor Things, was one of my favourite movies of 2023. Not surprisingly, Bugonia is equally intense and often uncomfortably original, though not as visually striking. In short, it centers on the kidnapping of a CEO (Stone) by a seemingly deranged conspiracy theorist who believes she is a powerful alien. His hapless, and cognitively challenged younger cousin, is forced along for the ride. Thinking about this film I came to the realization that conspiracy theories, for all their anger-inducing lunacy, are also a return to mythological thinking, the belief that events can be explained as deliberate actions by supernatural beings. I believe that Bugonia is a modern myth that retreads the ancient theme of purging the earth of human evil, or original sin. The ending may surprise you, but I think it makes sense when viewed from this vantage point. Emma Stone turns in an Oscar-worthy performance, though I suspect she won't get one so soon after her 2024 Oscar for Poor Things. It's an engaging, suspenseful and very quirky film.
