A spaceship doomed to drift endlessly through space feels like a premise built for either a tense survival thriller or an existential meditation. Aniara commits fully to the latter, and it's better for it. Rather than chasing spectacle, it leans into silence, isolation, and the crushing vastness surrounding its characters. That restraint gives the film an eerie power that never lets up. Considering its modest budget, the production design is impressively immersive, and the cast convincingly charts the slow unraveling of people forced to confront a future with no escape. I became much more invested in the film than I expected. I also admired its confidence in letting mood and ideas carry the experience instead of conventional science fiction set pieces. What lingered with me afterward was the film's refusal to offer comfort. It never backs away from the bleak implications of its premise, and some of its darkest moments are genuinely unsettling precisely because they're handled with such restraint. I respected that unwavering approach. My only reservation is that I felt I had arrived at the film's central ideas before it had. As the situation grew more desperate, the emotional impact continued to build, but the philosophical side of the story didn't feel like it was uncovering much that hadn't already been established. Even so, Aniara is a thoughtful, haunting work of science fiction that left a lasting impression. I just wish the film's ideas had continued to deepen as much as the tragedy unfolding around it.

Are you having a nice day? Do you have any faith in humanity? Well, put a stop to all that with Aniara! A truly despicable piece of cinema that you'll never watch again but that some will feel smug and cultured by praising. Wooden acting, glacial pacing, and an absurd plot all join forces in this miserable display of pointless drivel. Combine that with a Director that loves close ups so much that he nearly sticks the camera up the character's noses every other shot and you'll have realize that the last 2 hours would have been better spent doing ANYTHING else.

I really liked the core concept of Aniara, but the execution felt underwhelming, likely due to a limited budget. A major disappointment for me was that I never truly felt the characters were in outer space or even on a spaceship; the setting felt too grounded. Feels like a mall in space. Additionally, the pacing was a bit slow, making the film feel longer than it needed to be. It’s a shame because a great concept was somewhat wasted by the makers.

It is a slow burn, but when it picks up, it certainly picks up. This is one of the most nihilistic and dystopian sci-fi's I've seen, and it's hidden behind a very shiny and polished start. If you stick with it, you'll get a movie that stays with you. It certainly did so for me.

Excellent movie. A haunting and terrifying tale in it's own right, yet told in a gentle, quiet manner. One of the best Sci-Fi movies in recent times.
