The Great North volgt de avonturen van de familie Tobin in Alaska, waar alleenstaande vader Beef zijn best doet om zijn rare kinderen bij zich in de buurt te houden. In het bijzonder zijn enige dochter Judy, met haar artistieke dromen die haar weghalen van de vissersboot van de familie en meevoeren naar de glamoureuze wereld van het plaatselijke winkelcentrum. De andere leden van de familie zijn Judy’s oudere broer Wolf en zijn verloofde Honeybee, haar middelste broer Ham en haar tienjarige, vroegwijze broertje Moon. Terwijl hun moeder buiten beeld is, zoekt Judy steun bij haar nieuwe bazin Alyson en haar denkbeeldige vriendin Alanis Morissette, die aan haar verschijnt in het noorderlicht.
