Hij ging tien jaar geleden met vervroegd pensioen omdat hij tijdens zijn dienst een kleine crimineel neerschoot uit vermeende zelfverdediging en daar niet mee om kon gaan. Momenteel heeft hij zijn zesjarige kleinzoon Robert bij zich, wiens ouders op vakantie zijn. Als de gevoelige jongen op een avond beweert dat hij een man een vrouw zag vermoorden door het raam van een flat aan de overkant, zegt Felber gewoon tegen Robert dat hij niet zulke onzin moet verzinnen. Als zijn kleinzoon later zelfs verklaart dat "Cooper" de moordenaar was en hem ook stalkt, verbiedt Felber hem zulke "onzin" te verzinnen. Elli Hall used to be a dancer, but had to interrupt her career when she was expecting a child. She lived with her little daughter Angie at her sister Traudel's until she met Hall and they got married. The older man loves her passionately and at the same time fears losing the attractive young woman to someone else. This is exactly what happens when Elli Hall discovers that her husband has set the detective on her. Fellner takes a shine to her and she flirts with him; when the detective wants to return the job and Hall confesses that he has fallen in love with his wife, he kills him in a fit of rage. He hides the body in his magazine and later dumps it in the Main. The next day Elli tells her husband that she wants to leave him and move in with Fellner. Hall implores her in vain to stay with him. The next morning, Elli is found stabbed to death in a wooded area near a sex bar. Since she has her papers with her, she can be quickly identified. Inspector Brinkmann takes over the investigation. He learns from Hall that his wife had jewelry worth several 100,000 marks with her when she left him. Since the jewelry has disappeared, the first suspicion is that Elli was the victim of a robbery-murder; however, the way the unknown perpetrator mauled her speaks against it. Tijdens hun onderzoek naar de omgeving van de dode man stuiten inspecteur Flemming en zijn collega Miriam Koch op desolate familieomstandigheden: twee afwijzende dochters die op macabere wijze reageren op de dood van hun vader, een aan pillen verslaafde huishoudster en tenslotte de ex van de dode man. vrouw, die... Modeontwerpster woont in Parijs, is momenteel in Düsseldorf om haar collectie te presenteren en was helemaal niet van plan Eschen naar Berlijn te vergezellen. Flemming kan niet ontsnappen aan de fascinatie van deze vrouw, ook al is de wereld waarin Marie Eschen leeft allesbehalve de zijne.
