What I appreciated most was how the show treated military life with respect while still embracing the warmth and humour of a classic family sitcom. It never slipped into parody or cheap stereotypes; instead, it captured the everyday rhythms, challenges, and quirks of living within a military culture in a way that felt honest. Watching Major MacGillis juggle duty, discipline, and the chaos of family life reminded me of situations I’d seen growing up, and that authenticity made the comedy land even better. The show’s willingness to portray the services accurately—while still keeping things light—made it easy to connect with and clearly helped foster cooperation with the real military. For me, Major Dad struck the perfect balance: funny, grounded, and respectful of the world it portrayed. It remains a nostalgic favourite because of that sincerity.
