Magnum lived in paradise, drove a red Ferrari, wore short shorts and solved crimes between beers and beach volleyball. He was a private investigator with charm, sarcasm and just enough trauma to keep it interesting. Higgins was the uptight foil, TC flew the chopper, Rick ran the club and the banter was pure gold. The show mixed action, humor and heart, sometimes goofy, sometimes surprisingly deep. As a teen, it felt like grown up cool. The theme song slapped, the cases were just complicated enough and the Hawaiian backdrop made it all feel like a holiday with danger.

Thomas Magnum is een voormalige Naval Intelligence officer die na zijn ontslag een eigen privédetective onderneming opricht in Oahu, Hawaii. Hij woont in Robin’s Nest, het luxeuze gasthuis met uitzicht op zee van eigenaar Robin Masters, een bekende auteur van spannende boeken. In ruil voor onderhoud en bewaking van het landgoed mag Magnum er verblijven. Robin’s Nest wordt gerund door de Engelsman Jonathan Quayle Higgins III, een ex-sergeant-majoor van het Britse Leger en wordt bijgestaan en bewaakt door twee zeer goed getrainde Dobermanns, Apollo en Zeus. Verder helpen zijn vrienden Rick Wright en T.C. Calvin een handje mee tijdens zijn onderzoeken.
