- mhamreus5 februari 2026This is controlled chaos done right. Peter Bogdanovich revives classic screwball comedy and lets it tear through San Francisco with zero apologies. Fast dialogue, escalating misunderstandings, physical gags, and pure slapstick energy that never lets up. Barbra Streisand is unstoppable as Judy Maxwell, a walking tornado of confidence and mischief. Ryan O’Neal is perfectly cast as the increasingly unhinged straight man, watching his carefully planned life get flattened in real time. Their chemistry is the engine that keeps everything from flying off the rails. Then there is Madeline Kahn, stealing scenes as the hilariously jealous, tightly wound fiancée. Her line delivery, facial expressions, and sheer commitment elevate every moment she is in. This is early proof of the comedic brilliance she would later unleash in Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. The plot is proudly absurd. Four identical plaid bags. Mistaken identities stacked on top of mistaken identities. Slapstick chaos that keeps escalating until it detonates into one of the most gloriously unhinged car chases ever filmed. San Francisco’s hills are basically cast members, and the chase is funny not because it is thrilling, but because it is joyfully stupid in the best way. What makes What’s Up, Doc? endure is confidence. The movie never explains the joke. It trusts timing, rhythm, and performance. It knows slapstick works best when played straight and fast.
- alexnoaholdmate28 maart 2026Peter Bogdanovich - who always wanted to be Howard Hawks - remakes Hawks's classic comedy 'Bringing Up Baby', but without the leopard this time. It's funny, the jokes are good, the physical comedy not so much. Ryan O'Neal is no Cary Grant, but Barbra Streisand is cute as a button - and has perfect comic timing. Have fun.
- Michael Surber17 februari 2026Saw this one in the theater back when it was released. Just as funny today even though this style of film is fairly dated. Film classics like this one or any one of Peter Sellars films simply would not be made today and that's tragic. Instead we are innundated with mediocre content shoveled onto Netflix while there are true gems out there that so many have never seen.
