- hunterpr11 september 2026The Coen Brothers love to point out that the universe is random and the consequences are either cruel, hilarious, or both. In this context the straightforward morality of The Ladykillers sticks out like a sore thumb. It was not at all like I expected but I think that may be part of the point. If you make it your place to remind people that they can't ever really know what's coming, then at some point a perfect morality play isn't simple and instead becomes meta commentary. Their larger point is driven home by the fact that the pieces fit with the precision of a toddler's shape sorter; the coincidence and simplicity are exaggerated to the point of ridiculousness which practically has the Coen Brothers winking into the camera saying "you know *this* isn't how the world works". So this is one of the Coens' most unique works which makes it enjoyable in its own right. That being said, I like their standard fare. I prefer that they stick to their old reliable unpredictable ways.
