Where to Watch The Grudge
- MrTrivet10 maart 2026Looking back, I wonder how I could have been so terrified watching The Grudge 20 years ago - today, the film only scares on paper. Perhaps our TikTok brains have been rewired for rapid stimuli, but from a modern perspective, the attempts to build tension in The Grudge feel predictable and formulaic. Still, Hollywood’s financial backing helped Shimizu improve the film’s technical side. The plot is a clever retelling of the original, reworking clichés from the Japanese source material while using similar techniques, set design, and shots, making the film more digestible and coherent for a wider audience. It’s worth noting that the special effects have aged surprisingly well. That said, The Grudge today is at best an entry-level horror for less seasoned viewers. Yet it’s still worth appreciating its impact on the genre and its role in popularizing Asian horror in Western cinema.
- MR_BigTime23 januari 2026The concept here is promising. In fact I have to give the original a re-watch as well. But I digress. What we get with this version of The Grudge is what could've been a great movie had it employed its resources fully and if the logic behind it all wasn't all over the place.
- carter28824 maart 2026The Grudge is a wasteful movie with nothing to offer. Other than a couple of good creepy effects and jump scares and of course Sarah Michelle Gellar there’s nothing in here for me. The film visually looks cheep. The film has no good kills in it, they’re all off screen. The characters aren’t all that great and I have no idea why this takes place in Japan. Overall it’s not terrible but a movie I will probably never revisit again.
- Razorbitz29 november 2025As a capstone to our (near) completion of Buffy, we watched the Grudge. It was alright, but not as good as 10 year old me remembers. Very much a film from the 2000s yet it still has charm, and its best moments still work. I have no doubt the original is better and I intend to watch it one day, but this one sits in a comfortable spot of nostalgia that I didn't regret dusting off this year. Nothing amazing but still worth a watch if you want to see what Buffy gets up to after the series ended--it weirdly fits! Sarah Michelle Gellar is unfortunately underplayed here but its still a fun spooky time that wears a little thin by the end.
- "THE MOVIE FANATIC"7 november 2025This is one of 4 films that genuinely terrified me as a kid!!!! The setting I've always loved which adds to the movies mood, tone & atmosphere. The pacing of it is very solid....both the visuals and cinematography in this movie are brilliant to look at. There was very good supense, tension building and the uneasiness I feel when watching even now at certain moments. The Grudge is a very unsettling film with some really well done jumpscares....always really liked The Grudge.
