76 voor Christus. Spartacus wordt als slaaf verkocht aan Lentulus Batiatus. Hij is de rijke eigenaar van een school voor gladiatoren in Capua. Volgens de traditie krijgt Spartacus een gezellin toegewezen. Het gaat om Virinia. Dit meisje komt uit Brittannië. Op weg naar Rome wil generaal Marcus Licinius Crassus zijn reisgezellen verstrooien met een gevecht tussen gladiatoren. Spartacus wordt 'gekozen' en krijgt de Afrikaanse reus Draba als tegenstander. Maar Draba raakt plotseling buiten zichzelf en stormt plotseling op de toeschouwers af. Crassus moet hem doden. Enige tijd later ziet Spartacus de kans om een gladiatorenrevolte op te zetten. Hij vormt nu een regelrechte bedreiging voor de Romeinse overheid.

- Mister Arn11 mei 2025It's amazing to think that Spartacus was made before cgi. The movie is epic in scale and scenery with battles that make the big screen come alive. This is one of my favorite films.

Kennedy won in one of the closest American presidential elections ever. The Civil Rights Movement was operating full steam ahead, with a renewed promise of federal legislation protecting African Americans. The hard work of ending discrimination and disenfranchisement – and, in doing so, pursuing the cause of freedom – was thick in the air.

While naïve on most of its subject matter and tragically outdated in some of its old school sensibilities, it ultimately stands the test of time in comparison many of its sword and sandal contemporaries. While it lacks Stanley Kubrick traditional artisanal eye, it does have a distinct visual flair to it and is competently shot throughout. Beyond its notorious behind the scenes drama, blood sweat and tears ooze through each of its handmade sets, props and backdrops. They really were building whole camps just to burn them down. Kirk Douglas is a complete stud in his role as Spartacus, bringing a confident swagger to its lead role. Truly a classic Hollywood saga. They just don’t make em like they used to.
