Old man Oleg Batorov is quietly living out his days in the remote Far East when his granddaughter Vera suddenly arrives with her boyfriend, Kolya. Batorov last saw Vera when she was a baby, but he barely has time to get to know her again-the next morning, she and Kolya are kidnapped by bandits. It turns out that, in an attempt to make some easy money, Kolya agreed to transport a car loaded with illegal substances, but it was stolen en route. The bandits decide to take Vera hostage so Kolya can repay his debt. Vera is not only Batorov's only granddaughter, she is the only bright memory in his slowly fading memory. The old man has long suffered from Alzheimer's and begins each new day with a notebook, in which he writes down his previous one, so he can remember it later. Realizing that there is no hope for the incompetent Kolya, Batorov decides to bring Vera back himself. He engages in a brutal confrontation with local gangsters, and then with the Chinese mafia across the Haihe River. During the showdown, the old man displays unexpected skill with weapons, cruelty, and ingenuity, sparking increasing interest in his past.
