Where to Watch Jood Süss
- Garrett Wilkins1 dag geledenWatching Power, better known as Jew Süss, nearly a century after its release was a fascinating experience because of where it sits in film history. As one of the oldest movies I've ever seen, it felt like stepping into a different era of filmmaking, with dialogue, narrative pacing, and storytelling unlike anything that audiences feel entitled to now. Even so, I admired the manner in which the film allowed its historical drama to unfold naturally through its characters rather than leaning on spectacle. Conrad Veidt's gives a memorable performance that would be convincing in any era, and the film showcases surprisingly polished production for such an early sound film. I can't pretend watching the first half didn't take some getting used to, whether because of the translated dialogue, the storytelling conventions of the 1930's, or my own unfamiliarity with films from the period. As it went on, though, I became much more invested, and that gradual connection was one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. I came away with a genuine appreciation for Jew Süss as both an engaging historical drama and a fascinating snapshot of a Europe only a few years removed from the infamous 1940 adaptation and, of course, the outbreak of World War II.
