A well shot and acted western film with a pretty straight forward plot that you would expect from this genre. Costner and Duvall do a great job and make this movie shine! I could have done without the last 20-30 mins of the movie, I found the whole love story part dragged on. What’s up with all the fade out transitions?!

Everybody loooooves this movie so I’m scared to say I thought it was fine? Some beautiful shots but I had to Google if it was made for TV the way it faded to black every 15 minutes (it wasn’t). Anyway, had fun!

“Open Range” is a western with landscapes that match the name. The story takes its time building tension while its main characters move with restraint and grounding. That dynamic between Costner and Duvall is the film’s backbone, delivering the cowboy mystique and effective shootout at the end.

One of my favorite shootouts in a movie, ahead of Silverado. We lost Duvall, this will be felt. This leaves a giant hole in the acting world no one can fill.

Open Range delivers strong, grounded performances—Robert Duvall brings quiet authority, James Russo adds real menace, and Diego Luna is a standout in his smaller role. The central showdown is gripping and feels like the film’s natural emotional peak. The extended ending that follows, though, drags the momentum down; stopping right after the shootout would have given the story a cleaner, more powerful finish
