- Zokkiie3 april 2026I haven’t seen it in at least 16 years, and coming back to it now, it really surprised me how well it holds up. It feels grounded and sincere in a way you don’t see that often anymore—no unnecessary spectacle, just a story told with confidence. What really stands out is Joseph Fiennes—he absolutely carries it. There’s a quiet intensity to his performance that never feels forced, and he brings a lot of depth without overdoing anything. You can tell he fully understood the role. It’s not perfect and slows down a bit in places, but the performances—especially his—make it easy to stay invested. Thoughtful, well made, and definitely worth revisiting.

In het jaar 1505 doet de jonge Martin Luther tijdens een hevig onweer de belofte dat hij tot het klooster zal toetreden. Verscheurd door een gevoel van eigen zondigheid en angst voor een straffende God wordt Luther al snel door zijn biechtvader op pelgrimstocht gestuurd naar Rome. Daar komt hij in aanraking met de levendige handel in relikwieën en aflaten van de Rooms-katholieke kerk. Terug in Wittenberg wordt Luther benoemd tot doctor en hij begint colleges te geven. In deze periode schrijft hij zijn 95 stellingen tegen de aflaatverkoop. Hierdoor komt hij in een ernstig conflict met de Rooms-katholieke kerk. De paus doet er alles aan om Luther zover te krijgen dat hij zijn leer herroept. Martin Luther wil echter vasthouden aan de bijbel.
