It’s a simple setup, but the film leans into its dreamlike atmosphere, eerie music and stark, almost surreal production design to create a sense of creeping dread that still works today. The sand pit, the underground tunnels, the emotionless “taken over” adults everything feels slightly off, like a nightmare you only half remember. Jimmy Hunt carries the story with genuine fear and confusion and the film’s practical effects and bold color palette give it a distinctive look that sets it apart from other 50s alien invasion movies. It’s the kind of movie you catch on TV and end up watching all the way through because the mood is so strange and hypnotic. A landmark of early sci‑fi that mixes innocence, paranoia and pulp charm into something uniquely memorable.

In one scene, they use the giant telescope to look at the landing spot near the boy's house, and it makes me wonder what the professor does with that telescope in his free time.
