Visually and technically remarkable, the cool atmosphere and detached portrayal of the characters emphasise their alienation and the danger they find themselves in, but something is missing here. It is like a fairy tale told coldly and with a distance.

Plenty of dreary, atmospheric tension. Beautifully filmed on a limited budget.

This is an excellent horror film true to the genere but also to the pastime. This IMDb should be at least.. 7.6/10

Another Osgood Perkins movie that seems criminally underrated. Admittedly, the movie can feel more like a dream, following a story that everyone knows without really modifying the core components. It acts more like a dark fairy tale, building atmosphere and really sharpening some of the director's strong imagery that was showcased in Blackcoat's Daughter. This movie has some extremely gorgeous shots that I thought were better than the vast majority of standard horror movies and can go toe to toe with the best from modern horror. Specifically, I thought the movie did a fantastic job with the use of color, both symbolically and just in terms of cinematography. Though the plot isn't anything particularly special, I did like how it fleshed out Gretel's character and made the witch more menacing. I can understand how people feel like the movie is more style than substance, and it definitely has less stakes and tension than The Blackcoat's Daughter, but I would still recommend it to people looking for a director who has already illustrated exemplary shot composition. I'm excited to see what Osgood Perkins can do once he has a more dynamic screenplay, fingers crossed Longlegs is exactly that.
