Where to Watch Face to Face
- makdelart24 maart 2026One of Bergman’s finest films, though not an easy watch due to the coldness that emanates from it – every scene exudes pessimism. This is one of Liv Ullmann’s finest performances; she plays a psychiatrist grappling with psychological issues, suffering from a sense of existential hopelessness. She is lonely and alienated, emotionally distant even from her husband and daughter. Her seemingly warm attitude towards her grandmother is merely an illusion: at a critical moment, she vents long-suppressed grievances and traumatic childhood memories. In the final scene, when she decides to return to normal life, we do not feel that this is an optimistic ending.
