The film’s premise establishes that this is an intelligence test where overthinking or trying to be 'over-smart' backfires, yet the characters do exactly that. Ultimately, the movie feels fairly average; it lacks the genuine suspense and thriller elements needed to keep you on the edge of your seat.
- Kevin Ward26 april 2026Reasonably fun little flick that reminded me a lot of the Escape Room films, albeit contained to a single room and not nearly as elaborate of an “escape.” But the thematics and general premise are fairly similar. At a certain point though, it feels like the screenplay runs out of ideas for puzzles to solve in this fairly bare bones exam room and instead attempt to invoke character based twists. Some of these character pivots feel completely contrived, often make said characters behavior up to that point seem nonsensical. And they did Gemma Chan dirty.

Set almost entirely in a single room with eight candidates competing for a high-stakes job, the film relies on tension, psychology, and character dynamics rather than flashy action. The writing is sharp enough to keep you engaged without leaving you bored or completely baffled, striking a sweet spot between complexity and accessibility. Every clue, every line of dialogue, and every shifting alliance matters. The stripped-down setting forces you to focus on the personalities and the rules of the test, making the whole experience feel more like an escape-room mind game. Exam proves that tight writing and smart ideas can create suspense just as effectively as big budgets.
- Daniel Gustavsson12 oktober 2024A little too predictable for my taste. Not really a great resolution either. Not really a whole bunch of gore either. Hmm, why did I give this a 4 again? Well, it was very interesting, and I do like the characters. It kept me on my toes throughout, even if it was somewhat easy to see what the ending would be like. Personally I did not like what the answer was to the question. Anyway, if you like this premise, see it without expecting much. If you don't like these kinds of movies in general, skip it.

Een groepje van acht getalenteerde kandidaten is geslaagd voor een laatste test en mag nu deel worden van een machtige, maar mysterieuze organisatie. Ze gaan een kamer zonder ramen binnen en krijgen hier tachtig minuten de tijd om slechts één vraag te beantwoorden. Er zijn echter wel een paar regels waaraan ze moeten voldoen, anders worden ze gediskwalificeerd; ze mogen niet praten tegen de opdrachtgever, de bewapende bewaker bij de deur, hun vragenlijsten bekladderen, of de kamer verlaten. De tijd gaat in, en de opdrachtgever verdwijnt. De kandidaten bekijken de papieren waarop de vragen zouden moeten staan, maar tot hun verbazing zijn deze blanco. Samen besluiten ze uit te zoeken wat de vraag is, maar doordat ze elkaars achtergrond ontdekken, lopen de spanningen hoog op.
