Ralph Bakshi blends live-action and cartoon chaos to tell the story of Brother Rabbit, Brother Bear and Preacher Fox, three hustlers rising through Harlem’s underworld. It’s a twisted Uncle Remus tale, but with gangsters, corrupt cops and racial caricatures turned inside out. The visuals are wild,gritty, surreal and intentionally abrasive. Barry White and Scatman Crothers lend serious soul to the voice cast and the soundtrack pulses with defiant energy. Bakshi doesn’t pull punches; he uses stereotypes to confront them, forcing viewers to see the ugliness rather than ignore it.
