Van Tim Lippe (Helms) dacht men altijd dat hij het zou maken. Hij woont echter al z’n hele leven in het oersaaie slaapstadje Brown Valley, Wisconsin, samen met z’n vroegere schoollerares Macy Vanderhei (Weaver). Hij probeert verzekeringen aan de man te brengen die de dromen van anderen beschermen. Maar nu zal Tims rustige leventje een serieuze boost krijgen: voor het eerst in 34 jaar moet hij naar een “gigantische” metropool – Cedar Rapids, Iowa – waar hij z’n bedrijf moet zien te redden op een alles-of-niets verzekeringsconventie die voor hem allesbehalve conventioneel zal verlopen. Vanaf het moment dat Tim in het hotel incheckt is het duidelijk dat hij er geen idee van heeft hoe het er in de moderne wereld aan toegaat.
