In 1939 verdienden in het noorden van Ontario (Canada) Johnny Dutton, 'Tiny' Murphy, 'Blimp' Lebec en 'Scrounger' Harris, piloten in de burgerluchtvaart, de kost door met hun kleine apparaten regionale commerciële vluchten uit te voeren.
