Where to Watch Cape Fear
- Martin Scorcese's filmography as director is one of the most accomplished in modern film history. While Cape Fear can't even hold a candle next to "Taxi Driver", "Raging Bull" and "Goodfellas", it is still a fabulous remake of the 1962 noir classic and it keeps the viewer on the edge right through until the closing credits.
- De Niro is fucking nuts in this. Max Cady is such an unsettling character, and watching him slowly make this family's life miserable is easily the best part of the movie. He's creepy, manipulative and just completely unpredictable. The rest of the cast is great too, especially Juliette Lewis. Scorsese gives the whole thing a really nasty atmosphere, and there are some great tense moments throughout. It does go a bit crazy in the final stretch and isn't exactly subtle, but I actually think that fits the movie. Really entertaining thriller with a fantastic villain and some great performances.
- Cape Fear is biblically epic. Featuring frantic, aggressive camera work and editing, a tremendous score, as well as a great cast with committed performances from all the leads. Treats its dark disturbing subject matter exactly so. Tense and terse for the first two acts, it definitely gets a little silly as it goes on. Perhaps, some plot points and character motives a bit too convenient, the script weak at times, these facts don't get in the way of being one of those films you can point at in Scorsese's filmography to demonstrate that he is one of the all time greats. Regardless of any flaws, it's thoroughly entertaining.
- This was a really strange movie. On the one hand, I liked the way it was shot. Set pieces were good, flow was good, and lots of good uses of lighting to make DeNiro scary. I also liked the dialogue. I thought that there wasn't much wasted dialogue, and the characters had some depth. Juliette Lewis was absolutely stunning in this. I was extremely impressed. She punched way above her weight class. Nick Nolte was also great, I always forget he wasn't a schlub actor. On the other hand, there were just some strange, strange choices. The strangest was DeNiro's accent. Its just incredibly jarring to listen to the entire movie, and frankly, makes him not scary at all at times. He often sounds like a LooneyToons character. Hell, he can still be from Georgia and not sound like a buffoon. Despite my earlier comment, there were some stranges choices to animate the sky towards the end of the movie, that also didn't make sense. I wish the book he had left Juliette was a bit more involved, otherwise it seems like some of that was chopped from the script and the whole thing as a whole should have been removed. All in all, good movie.
