Be aware that this biblical epic is only "according to scripture" in the opening scenes as little is known or written about the man called Barabbas. The story mostly comes from a 1950 novel by the same name which paints him as a non-believer struggling to believe, a man with a blessed ability to avert his death but a cursed inability to preserve his freedom. Fun Fact: The crucifixion scene (at Calvary) was filmed in Italy during an actual total eclipse of the sun, on February 15, 1961.
