- Callum4 dgn geleden⭐⭐½ – Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter – History class after too many energy drinks. This is one of those films where the title alone tells you whether you’re on board or not. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is exactly what it sounds like — a wildly exaggerated mash-up of historical fiction, gothic horror, and action spectacle that fully commits to its ridiculous premise. Honestly, I don’t remember huge amounts of the finer details, which probably says something about its staying power, but I do remember it being surprisingly watchable in the moment. The film leans hard into style over substance, throwing axes, slow motion, and vampire politics at the screen with complete sincerity. It’s absurd, but importantly, it knows it’s absurd. It was also probably one of the first things I saw Anthony Mackie in, which is funny looking back now given how much bigger he’s become since. Even then, though, he had a solid screen presence that helped ground some of the more ridiculous moments. The biggest issue is that once the novelty of “what if Abraham Lincoln fought vampires?” wears off, there isn’t a huge amount underneath. The action is flashy, the visuals are stylised, and there are a few genuinely cool sequences, but emotionally it never really lands. It’s less a great movie and more a very committed concept. Still, you have to give it credit for going all in. Half-hearted versions of this idea would’ve been unbearable. This at least has the confidence to swing the axe properly. 🥃 A bourbon mixed with an energy drink — strange, excessive, and somehow more entertaining than it probably should be.
