Where to Watch Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain
- RichardOctober 19, 2025Found this one in a bargain DVD bin, one of those dusty racks where you expect forgotten rom coms and bootleg kung fu flicks. But this? This was a treasure. Tsui Hark’s fantasy epic is pure visual chaos: flying swords, glowing monks and battles that feel like a fever dream choreographed by a caffeinated wizard. Yuen Biao plays the young scout who stumbles into a supernatural war and suddenly we’re neck deep in floating fortresses, blood demons and immortal warriors with names like Ice Queen and Devil Disciple Leader. The effects are gloriously bonkers, early Hong Kong wirework meets experimental optical tricks. It’s not polished, but it’s wildly imaginative. You can practically hear the crew shouting “Just make it glow more!” The pacing is relentless, the plot barely pauses to explain itself and the dialogue feels like it was translated by someone who loved poetry and chaos equally. I loved the sheer ambition. It’s the kind of movie that made adult years feel like a VHS hallucination, confusing, dazzling and absolutely worth the €5 gamble.
