Zatoichi in Desperation
Directed by Shintarō KatsuStar Shintaro Katsu sits in the director's chair for this psychedelic and unremittingly bleak entry in the Zatoichi series, which is unlike any other in its grind-house grimness. A tale of innocence corrupted by sadistic, sleazy criminality, the film is propelled by Easy Rider-esque editing and a trippy seventies funk score by Kunihiko Murai.
Where to Watch Zatoichi in Desperation
- hairydemonJune 9, 2025Maybe one of the most daring and beautiful films i have ever seen. All shot on long lenses, with directing decisions so bold as to make it utterly unique. It would be difficult to ever be allowed to make a film like this, but Shintaro katsu was on film 24, and he was the star so obviously allowed to do as he pleased. And as the audience, we know his character and the general storylines so well by now, that it is incredible to see it from a totally new, clautraphobic and hallucinogenic point of view. In shout, not to be skipped to, but well worth the wait at 24.
