A peace treaty between the Earth and the Black World, a parallel universe of demons, is coming to an end. Two cops, Taki, a human male, and Maki, a female demon, are assigned to protect a diplomat who will help secure another treaty. A radical group of demons from the Black World are out to assassinate the diplomat and prevent the treaty; only the bond that forms between the two cops can save the Earth from destruction.

I first saw Wicked City on an import VHS, and it felt like I’d stumbled onto something forbidden. Set in a noir soaked Tokyo, the film dives into the uneasy truce between the human world and the a parallel dimension full of grotesque, supernatural beings. It’s a wild blend of cyberpunk, supernatural thriller and noir, with mature themes that hit harder than most anime of its time. The creatures are imaginative and unsettling. It’s not for the faint of heart, there’s graphic content and some disturbing imagery that definitely pushed boundaries. Wicked City is raw, stylish and unapologetically adult. That import VHS felt like a secret portal into the darker corners of anime and I’ve never forgotten it.
