This movie is pure slapstick brilliance—a cult classic that somehow went from Sundance flop to comedic gold. Imagine Naked Gun meets teen camp chaos, but weirder, zippier, and packed with early-’80s absurdism. 🎯🤣🌲 Who’s in it? • Michael Showalter (co-writer & actor, from The State troupe)—kept that sketch-comedy sensibility flowing • Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, Elizabeth Banks, Ken Marino, Michael Ian Black, Joe Lo Truglio, Molly Shannon, Christopher Meloni, and more—you don’t get all these future A-listers being this stupid and this funny These are the State-connected minds (Showalter, Wain, Black, Marino) flexing their comedic muscles, creating gleefully loopy chaos that feels like a fever dream of summer camp clichés—but with a sharp parody twist . Laughter, or “the why is this funny? I have no idea” comedy, reigns supreme. It’s so delightfully dumb that it loops right back to genius. And the best part? The cast totally didn’t know they had a classic in the making. Netflix even dropped two spinoffs—First Day of Camp (2015) and Ten Years Later (2017)—picking up the baton with nostalgia and fresh campfire jokes . This is one of those lightning-in-a-bottle movies—if you get its absurd comedy vibe, it’s a masterpiece. If you don’t, it’s exactly why it’s not for everybody—but for a certain kind of genius-level dumb humor, it’s peerless. ⸻ Tags: 😂 Sketch‑troupe Throwback, 🌞 Camp Parody, 🎬 Future Stars Galore, 🎯 Surreal Slapstick, 🔁 Cult Classic Revival

But even with its tackiness arched at an ironic angle, "Wet Hot American Summer's" long-term fate is to become at best a last-minute accessory to a Blockbuster night of pizza and beverages.
Chicago Reader
Lisa Alspector
The title of this inventive absurdist comedy (2001) is meant to mislead-it's not a sex movie but a parody, and the loose feel is part of its genius.
Village Voice
Nathan Lee
Structured only by its time frame (the last day of camp) and total commitment to casualness, the movie feels tossed off in the most appealing way,
Newsweek
David Ansen
This shamefully underpromoted, gloriously silly romp made me laugh harder than any other movie this summer...this blissfully unimportant movie starts in a deceptively low key, gradually unveiling its total lunacy.
Film.com
William Goss
The skewering of underdog sports clichés, horny teen staples and Vietnam-trauma melodrama is long overdue and perfectly irreverent in execution.
Variety
Dennis Harvey
Fairly hilarious -- if still scattershot -- final reels will leave auds feeling they've gotten their money's worth.
Detroit Free Press
Terry Lawson
Have a good summer.
AV Club

Few genres could lend themselves less readily to satire, much less a satire arriving 20 years too late... [but] one quality of comedy is that if it's funny, it needs no further justification, and Wet Hot American Summer is funny enough.
Lessons of Darkness
Nick Schager
A dumb - and fitfully funny - send-up of an already dumb genre.
Austin Chronicle
Kimberley Jones
It's a lot more fun than you'd expect.
Houston Chronicle
Bruce Westbrook
For all its failings, Wet Hot maintains energy and high spirits over most of its length. The trouble is, such energy and spirits are not infectious, and the movies it mocks were better.
Washington Post
Stephen Hunter
This is supposed to be funny? It was so depressing I almost started to cry.
Dallas Morning News
Tom Maurstad
This is an almost laughless bomb.
Seattle Times
Moira MacDonald
Likably silly.
San Francisco Chronicle
Edward Guthmann
A sloppy, unhinged hellzapoppin that occasionally hits its targets but more often seems out of control and desperate to please.
Boston Globe
Jay Carr
There's no getting around the fact that it's a hit-and-miss proposition.
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert
I want to escape, / Oh, Muddah Faddah-- / Life's too short for cinematic torture.
Washington Post
Desson Thomson
This movie strains so hard to be funny, it almost ruptures itself.
Chicago Tribune
Robert K. Elder
This low-budget comedy will most likely try the patience of a paying audience with its uneven pacing, wavering tone and poor production quality.
