Single Christine Arnold, who is a successful business lawyer in a Cologne law firm, is on her way to visit her old friend Judith, who is going through a very difficult phase in her life: she recently split up with her long-time boyfriend Felix. The two have a son together, Marco, who is very attached to his loving father. Whenever possible, the boy spends time with his dad. Judith would like to see Marco develop a friendly relationship with her new partner Georg. But although the good-natured Georg tries his best to win the boy's sympathy, Marco keeps his mother's "new" boyfriend at a distance. When the boy has an unfortunate bicycle accident during a visit to his father, Judith loses her temper: she wants to forbid the "irresponsible" Felix from seeing Marco. Of course, Felix is not prepared to accept this decision - in order to settle the matter once and for all, he wants to have his paternal claims confirmed by a court. To this end, he turns to Christine's father, the family lawyer Dr. Peter Arnold. When Judith secretly has a paternity test carried out, which shows that Felix is not Marco's biological father, Felix's legal chances dwindle: As a fake father, he cannot legally claim visitation rights. Nevertheless, Felix wants to go to court - for him, Marco remains his son, regardless of who the biological father is. Meanwhile, Christine tries to mediate between the warring parties - because on the one hand she can understand Judith's concerns, who finally wants to lead a normal family life again after the painful separation, and on the other hand she has understanding for the likeable Felix, who wants to be a good father to Marco despite everything. With this attitude, Christine is increasingly caught between the fronts. When she decides to represent the desperate Felix legally despite his slim chances of success, she risks her friendship with Judith and offends her father. In court, a hurtful mudslinging spree threatens to break out.
