Katharina von Holstein is a young noblewoman and loves penniless painter Johannes. However, her brother wants to marry her off to the wealthy neighbor to save her property from ruin. Without further ado, she pushes Johannes away and says that he is dead. When she finds out that Katharina is pregnant with him, she also expels her from her. She ends up in Hallig, where she marries a pastor who becomes a loving father to her son. But one day, Johannes, believed to be dead, came to town and there was an argument with a tragic outcome.
