- marshalsea4d agoUnderrated and underloved. Really good throw back to Leviathan or Deep Star Six. Much much better than the Abyss. Kristen and Vincent do a lot of heavy lifting, and as others have observed there's definitely some "we need an ahole, lets hire TJ" which works really well cause he's just so unlikeable. I disagree with the normal complaints of "We don't get any character development in this mainly real time film" - well it's 1.5h people don't change that quickly. "Everything's murky" well... yeah, you're underwater and there's a massive churn going on, and also someone understood that not showing you what's going on adds tension. At some point everyone will re-evaluate and do one of those "Why didn't I???" well, probably cause you listened to everyone else.
- RyezooFebruary 7, 2025This movie has so much potential. It has an awesome atmosphere and setting. The cast is all serviceable and it is intense at times. Kristen Stewart is solid as well. The problem with this movie other than you can’t see shit that’s going on. Is it does nothing to build up its characters. So I really don’t care what’s happening to them. Also the gore scare factor isn’t there. Like this film besides one of the intentional things that goes wrong shys away from showing most violence. So this film is close to being good but it misses the mark.
- Kraine OpasenJune 20, 2025“In the deep, no one can hear you panic.” Underwater is a tight, claustrophobic thrill ride — a sci-fi horror that wastes no time and grabs your nerves from the first minute. Set miles below the ocean’s surface, it plunges you straight into darkness, dread, and something far worse than pressure. Kristen Stewart delivers a strong, grounded performance as a reluctant survivor, surrounded by solid supporting cast and metal creaking from all sides. The tension is constant, the corridors are narrow, the suits are heavy — and so is the silence before the next jolt. It borrows from the best (Alien, The Abyss), but makes the deep-sea terror its own. The cinematography is murky and immersive, the pacing relentless, and the horror? Slow, suffocating, and eventually Lovecraftian. It may have flown under the radar, but Underwater is a hidden gem for fans of smart, stylish creature horror. Deep, dark, and absolutely worth the dive.
