The Driver and The Mechanic are car freaks driving a 1955 Chevy through the southwestern U.S., looking for other cars to race. They're totally dedicated to their car and speak with each other only when necessary. At a gas station, along with a girl who has ingratiated herself into their world, they meet G.T.O., a middle-aged man who fabricates stories. They all decide to have a race to Washington, D.C., where the winner will get the loser's car.

A classic cult movie. A snapshot of a high trust and carefree period in America. A girl and three guys searching for their path. Two guys are serious gear head drag racers while the third is an insecure pathological liar. The girl just floats through life hardly touching the ground, she makes no connections or commitments. When the mood strikes her, she literally drops everything she owns and walks away with a complete stranger. For some reason this movie just sticks with you. It's about freedom and the open road, yet they still are corralled by earthly needs and restraints. Money for food and gas. Cops issue a ticket to one of them. Will they get to their destination, do they care, are they even trying? It's all strangely compelling. Worth a watch if you like dramas about cars and 1970s America.

This is what it actually feels like to be on a road trip. May not be exciting. May have hours of silence. The gas stations can be the most eventful parts of the trip.
