Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me Ratings & Reviews

Love how this film starts off with the FBI terrorizing a group of high schoolers on a bus Also love how the “dumb” cops still act the exact same 25 years later i.e. Detectives Fusco & Chad All cocaine scenes are great but this one is exceptional. Immediately followed by the turkey quotes! So incredible Clearly, I’m in a mood. Super surreal couple of days! Probably inspired by the fact I crippled myself with alcohol!

David Lynch's prequel film, maligned upon its initial release, can now be seen as a hinge in his filmography - and a hint of what's to come.
Film Frenzy
Matt Brunson
[UPDATED 2025 REVIEW] An ungainly and unnecessary prequel to the excellent TV series.
WBUR’s Arts & Culture
Sean Burns
A horrible masterpiece. Ugly, abstract and unrelenting, it's like having someone else's nightmare.
ColeSmithey.com

As much an essential missing piece for audiences of David Lynch's groundbreaking 1991-'92 television series ("Twin Peaks") to gain closure as a stand-alone film, "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me" is an alternately funny, harrowing, and bizarre experience.
Movie Mezzanine
Christopher Runyon
One of Lynch's darkest, most disturbing films precisely because it is able to delve into the places that the show simply wasn't allowed to explore on national television.
Village Voice
Calum Marsh
In its own singular, deeply strange way, Fire Walk With Me is David Lynch's masterpiece.
Cinemania
Dan Jardine
A fascinating tightrope-walk: Lynch's ultra-cool unconventional storytelling techniques are modified just enough to allow the movie to reach a broad audience
Baltimore Sun
Stephen Hunter
If you didn't get it then, you're not going to get it now.
Entertainment Weekly
Owen Gleiberman
There have always been two sides to Lynch: the inscrutable, demonic prankster and the rhapsodic dreamer. In Fire Walk With Me, he's at least trying to recover his poetic sincerity. If only his dreams weren't starting to look like reruns.
Los Angeles Times
Michael Wilmington
At its best, it's a dream within a dream, a nightmare in endlessly reflecting pop mirrors, a screen full of TV-movie sex and horror kitsch blowing up right in our faces.
Philadelphia Inquirer
Steven Rea
In Twin Peaks the movie, all the twists get straightened out. The thrill is gone.
Orlando Sentinel
Jay Boyar
For those who are willing to go the distance with Lynch, the return trip to Twin Peaks is well worth the trouble.
Chicago Tribune
Dave Kehr
For a film with a pre-established conclusion, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me seems depressingly interminable.
Variety
Variety Staff
Suspense is clearly lacking in this story with a preordained outcome. Another significant drawback is that long before the climax Laura has become a tiresome teen.
Chicago Reader
Jonathan Rosenbaum
It has its moments, but not many, and generally speaking it runs neck and neck with Dune as the least successful and interesting Lynch feature.
New York Times
Vincent Canby
The film appears to be an undifferentiated mess of story lines and hallucinations. There's no reason to care which is which. Even Mr. Lynch's eccentric touches become boring. The jokes are stillborn.
Slant Magazine
Ed Gonzalez
Fabulously color-coded to resemble a dream world, a purgatory consumed by the sadness of blues and the terror of reds.
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers
If inspiration is lacking, talent is not. Count Lynch down but never out.
Austin Chronicle
Marjorie Baumgarten
With this movie David Lynch, the mad social architect of this wooded Northwest facsimile of civilization, has built himself a molehill out of what once was a mountain.
