- rg9400August 17, 2025I enjoyed Triangle a lot more after thinking about it as a concept versus when actually watching it. The actual plot beats played out just as I expected, with none of the reveals being shocking. Maybe I've just consumed enough stories that utilize these tropes, but it all felt very predictable to me. The movie, instead, tries to build up to these twists in a way that makes a lot of it feel boring as you wait for the shoe to drop. The concept also just lends itself to being slightly repetitive. It doesn't help that every single character outside of the main character Jess is as superficial as it gets. We might get a detail or two about them, but they may as well be nameless cardboard cutouts. The acting is similarly wooden. It's almost worse that the movie tries to setup some backstory since it never actually returns to it for any of the characters. However, as the movie starts to head to its conclusion, the denoument did actually surprise me. At the end of the movie, I finally understood what they were trying to do. And honestly? It's really clever. The ending recontextualizes a lot of what I saw before, and I think the way it ties into both the details as well as the plot and structure of the movie is very impressive. It adds a lot to the themes and character. I wish the actual movie was more entertaining because it really is such a solid concept. I think there was so much potential for this movie. It nails some of the hardest parts while missing the most basic elements, ultimately making it more interesting as an idea than an actual movie.
