Trap Ratings & Reviews
- GoGoJoeFebruary 16, 2025I wish the movie was written differently. The concept was great but the execution was not. I wish the antagonist was the hero leaving the mystery of who is to play out until the end
- rg9400November 1, 2024Trap is a strange movie to review. The plot actually moves into some interesting territory in the second half, suddenly feeling far more compelling. I legitimately enjoyed seeing the way the story develops into this shift, and there were a few sequences in that latter half that really felt captivating. However, so much of this movie requires turning off your brain. Almost all the actions, from both the police and the killer, seem incredibly illogical. It is not even remotely believable that either side is an expert at what they are doing. Logic simply has no place in this movie. The line delivery and dialogue is so stilted and awkward at times. It is intentional because Josh Hartnett can act, as evidenced by various moments throughout the movie, yet he is baffingly terrible at others, especially in the first half. In fact, a lot of the first half of the movie feels like Shyamalam trying to soft launch his daughter's music career. Yet, it's almost endearing how silly it all is, with my theater laughing throughout the movie in a fun way. Even if it was unintentional, there is a B-movie shlock feeling to the film that makes it entertaining in its ridiculousness. Still, I think there are so many things that could have been executed significantly better to make this movie much stronger, because the concept is actually good. It could have been on the level of Split, but instead it seems destined to be compared to the director's weaker work, even if it is more fun than those movies. At this stage, we should know what to expect from M Night Shyamalam, with his strong movies being the outliers and not the norm. This one had the potential to be that outlier, and though it can feel fun and engaging, it doesn't reach that potential.
- ragmondoFebruary 15, 2025If I had to watch this on an flight, I’d still walk out. This film is destined to be one of those “so bad it’s good” films that you must watch with friends and take a shot every time someone does something completely out of character or something just completely infeasible happens . Watch out though as you will have alcohol poisoning within 20 mins. Has Shama ever actually been to a concert ?!
- ScottDecember 15, 2024Some notably bad dialog (even for Shyamalan) can’t push me away from how much fun Hartnett is having. Not a good movie but so ludicrous that I couldn’t help but have fun imagining the continuing adventures of Lady Raven in a Knives Out-style cinematic universe where she tours around solving crimes.
- ShmooflixFebruary 2, 2025A complete waste of time. As many Shayamalan's movies. The protagonist is Shayamalan's family, and has the same talent as any chair you have. Please watch any other thing. Your lifetime is limited.
- DJOctober 17, 2024Trap lacks a lot of things, but mainly a gripping story with no sense of suspense despite that being the entire premise of the movie. Unfortauntely, it's a near miss for M. Night who continues to be extremely flakey when it comes to his offerings. Its too bad really, because the idea is good, the execution not so much.
- RyezooFebruary 4, 2025Great seeing Josh Harnett staring in a movie again, he is fun but ridiculous in this. That is this whole movie to a tee though, unbelievable circumstances, some bad acting, and goofy script sink this movie. Why are 1000s of people walking around while the main act is on, why is the concert in the daytime, and also over in the daytime? I'll end on a positive, the cinematography is great.
- ebd321January 27, 2025I really wanted to like this movie. The general premise is good, but the plot is so full of holes and devoid of logic, that I found it impossible to suspend reality.
- Rob Logan | The Geek GenerationJanuary 14, 2025M. Night Shyamalan keeps sucking me in with interesting premises and I'll give him infinite chances because I continue to be fascinated by his choices. Josh Hartnett absolutely crushes it here, and the majority of the film is the tense game of cat and mouse that I wanted. The third act, however, goes a bit off the rails with a series of logic leaps that I just couldn't hang with.
- vangh1December 18, 2024An absolute ride. No such thing as enough Josh Hartnett, he's having a blast and I'm having a blast watching him. Each step of the attempted escape, doled out hint by hint, makeshift weapon by makeshift weapon was beautifully paced and beautifully tense.
- Noah3210November 10, 2024Good movie a little weird. There was no twist, no background info on some characters.
- jackmeatNovember 10, 2024My quick rating - 6.2/10. This flick pulls us into a tense and sinister evening as a father and his teen daughter attend a highly anticipated pop concert, only to find themselves at the center of a chilling and calculated event. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, the film veers away from his signature shocking twist endings, offering instead a straightforward but well-executed psychological thriller. The film thrives on its tension-building, keeping us engaged even as the "who" and "what" of the plot becomes clear early on. It’s a testament to Shyamalan’s craftsmanship that the lack of a monumental twist doesn’t detract from the movie’s ability to maintain suspense and intrigue. I say this might even be considered the twist—there’s no unexpected revelation waiting in the wings, a refreshing departure for Shyamalan fans accustomed to his trademark surprises. Josh Hartnett delivers the goods in a standout performance as the menacing killer, oozing creepiness in every scene. His portrayal adds a certain layer of dread, ensuring the stakes remain high throughout the film. Meanwhile, Saleka Shyamalan, the director’s daughter, impresses as the pop star whose concert serves as the stage for the unfolding terror. Her involvement isn’t limited to singing; her character has a crucial role that deepens the plot, allowing her to shine in moments of vulnerability and strength. Visually, it carries the polished aesthetic one expects from Shyamalan’s work, with meticulous attention to framing and atmosphere. While it doesn’t aim for groundbreaking innovation, it’s a solid thriller that delivers tension and drama with a sharp focus. If you are seeking a gripping, well-acted film without the need for a jaw-dropping twist, this is worth the watch. It proves that even when Shyamalan strays from his narrative trademarks, he’s still a modern craftsman of suspense.
- The Gutter MonkeyOctober 16, 2024Not as clever and twisty-turny as we've come to expect from Shyamalan, but it's a fun enough little popcorn flick if you're willing to not spoil it for yourself by thinking too hard about how ridiculous it is.
