Tom and Jerry Ratings & Reviews
- Manuel FrangisMarch 9, 2025Alright, so I finally sat down to watch the Tom & Jerry (2021) movie, and… yeah, I’ve got some thoughts. As someone who grew up watching the Tom and Jerry Spotlight Collection and still enjoys the golden age of Tom and Jerry, I was hoping for something that at least respected the classic formula. Did it deliver? Kind of. First off, the animation—I’ll give them credit where it’s due. Keeping Tom and Jerry in their traditional 2D style while blending them into a live-action setting was a solid move. It kept the classic slapstick alive, and when the movie actually focused on their rivalry, it was fun. Tom getting wrecked in over-the-top ways? Jerry being an absolute menace? That’s what I signed up for. Now, here’s where things get messy—the human characters. I get it, Hollywood thinks they need a human storyline to carry the plot, but honestly, I came to watch Tom and Jerry, not a generic hotel drama. Chloë Grace Moretz did fine with what she was given, but her character’s story felt like filler. Every time the movie cut away from Tom and Jerry to focus on wedding planning or job drama, I just wanted to fast-forward. One thing that really bugged me? The soundtrack. The movie went heavy on hip-hop and pop tracks, which felt weirdly out of place. Like, Tom and Jerry doesn’t need a bunch of modern music drops—it just needs great sound design and classic orchestral cues that match the action. The older cartoons had such a tight connection between movement and music, and this movie lost that magic. That being said, there were moments that made me smile. Tom and Jerry’s antics in the hotel kitchen? Classic. Tom playing the piano and getting into a fight? Felt like a tribute to The Cat Concerto, and I appreciated that. But overall, the movie didn’t fully capture the spirit of what makes Tom and Jerry timeless. Would I watch it again? Probably not. If you’re a longtime Tom and Jerry fan, you might get some fun out of the animated parts, but the rest of the movie feels like a distraction. It’s one of those films that tries too hard to be modern instead of just letting the characters do what they do best—cause chaos and make us laugh. Final verdict? Stick to the classic 1940s shorts or even Tom and Jerry Tales if you want something newer but still true to the original style. This one? It’s a one-time watch at best.
