One minute you’re all in a hopeless situation, either injured or dead, with the weight of realisation crushing your will to survive… and the next you’re not. It’s not quite on the level of finding out your train has been cancelled and then it’s suddenly uncancelled so you can get home on time after all, but it’s close and well worth a celebratory pint of decent cider. So a group of sensible(?) students decide to go off and follow a guy who’s looking for a guy who’s looking for some hippies; well something like that anyway. I say sensible with a question mark, as they fail to tell anyone where they’re going and decide to take along two young teens as well. Needless to say it all goes a bit awry and it takes a long, long time for them to be rescued. Most of the action takes place in the Batcave – I mean in the actual, real Batcave. With hindsight it’s a shame Batman seems to have moved out by this point and taken absolutely all his bat gear with him. A few of his gadgets and bat-whatever-we-need-right-now equipment would probably have been really useful. What I do really love about this film is the idea. I wish the makers had had the resources to make it longer and explore the whole concept more fully. What they did was fine, but the story offered so much more. Now I’ll be the first to admit that if you start to pull at the thread of scientific logic, then this film falls to pieces quicker than a fortune cookie learning to swim, but if you can ignore that (and it’s tough I know, but give it a try), then it’s actually very entertaining. For a low budget movie it almost manages to stick its ‘big concept’ ending, except it seems to run out of time and money, so the last 15 or so minutes all feel somewhat rushed. I’m not a rock climber, caver, potholer or anything, but the way the guy loops the rope around the rock at the start, well I’d not trust it not to just pull off over the top first time I tried to use the rope. Why didn’t he put it below the bulge in the rock? I’m not convinced the rock was heavy enough anyway to even act as an anchor, but surely using it so the rope can’t pull off over the top is a better option. Just saying… Actually, maybe it is better on the top if the rock really is big enough not to be pulled about by someone using the rope. Sorry, I'm getting a bit sidetracked; it's really not that important in terms of the film. And what happened to Boss? I mean he was there one minute and then we just forgot about him. (Boss was the lovely Golden Labrador in case you don’t know.) It would have only taken a few minutes to show how he were eventually found and cared for by a kind soul, living a happy, peaceful and long life – or slowly starving to death in the wilderness, or being violently and painfully ripped to pieces or otherwise brutally killed by the local wildlife – but then we’d at least know. (I’m not going to pull the science apart, as there are other things I want to do with the rest of my life and I’d reach the word limit here anyway.) Technically it’s fine (and thank goodness it doesn’t suffer from that low budget, ‘so we’ll light all the dark scenes really badly and wobble the camara around a lot so you can’t see anything’, problem); the plot’s brilliant; the script’s adequate; and the acting is decent enough most of the time. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.
- SirMonkalot28 agosto 2026Great concept, mediocre execution. Even though the acting was subpar and the story took a little too long to get going, I was pretty invested and wanted to see where this was going. I’d love to see this concept done again with better actors and a better script.
