They Call Me Trinity is, in my eyes, the GREATEST western of all time. I’d only ever seen the first 10–15 minutes previously, but even then I already loved it because of the iconic intro & the legendary theme song. Now that I’ve finally watched the entire film in high quality, I can confidently say this movie exceeded every expectation I had. I genuinely don’t even know where to begin. Not only does this film deliver the classic badass western atmosphere of masterpieces like The Good, the Bad & the Ugly, Pale Rider, Hang ’Em High, High Plains Drifter, The Quick & the Dead & Once Upon a Time in the West, all films I absolutely adore, but it somehow ALSO works flawlessly as a comedy. & honestly it overtook all of them as my personal favourite western with ease. This movie is hilarious from start to finish. I was laughing constantly, but what makes it special is that despite the slapstick humour the movie still takes its world & stakes seriously. That balance is incredibly difficult to pull off. Most slapstick comedies eventually become too goofy & lose immersion even though they’re entertaining, but Trinity never does. The comedy enhances the film instead of undermining it. The absolute heart & soul of the movie is the chemistry between Terence Hill & Bud Spencer. Their dynamic is pure magic. There’s a reason they became one of the most iconic duos in western cinema history & starred together in so many beloved films, 18 films they made together. The Mormon sisters Sarah & Judith were also fantastic additions to the film, they’re beautiful, charming & add even more personality to the world. But beyond the performances, the TRUE highlight of the film is the score. The song “Trinity: Titoli” composed by Franco Micalizzi & performed by Annibale Giannarelli is honestly one of the greatest movie themes ever created. It perfectly captures the epic, playful, adventurous, dusty charm of the film & creates an atmosphere that’s impossible not to love. Every single time that whistle kicks in, the movie just radiates coolness. & yes, for people who recognise it that famous song was later used by Quentin Tarantino during the ending of ‘Django Unchained’, which shows just how influential & beloved this movie is among filmmakers. This film is an obvious 10/10 for me. Not only has it become my favourite western ever made, it honestly might have entered my personal top 5 or 6 favourite films of all time regardless of genre. A funny, stylish, endlessly charming masterpiece that every cinephile owes it to themselves to experience immediately.
