The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Ratings & Reviews

Really dig this remake, I think this was one of the first more modern horror movies I saw at the time it came out. Definitely saw this before watching the original. Quickly paced and straight to the point gruesomely knocking off bodies. The sets are magnificent, every location is riddled with rusty trash. The people are disgusting and dirty. So much spit and bodily fluids. A grisly take to a classic.
Variety
Scott Foundas
An initially promising, but quickly disappointing retread of Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel's hugely influential horror classic.
Chicago Reader
Jonathan Rosenbaum
'Inspired by a true story' presumably adds to the sordid thrills; maybe we should look forward to entertainments about Nazis torturing children.
Associated Press
Christy Lemire
Here's a slice of advice: Go to the video store and rent the original.
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers
All the bad-rehash mojo from Friday the 13th to The Blair Witch Project has infected Scott Kosar's script.
Movie Mom
Nell Minow
For dedicated admirers of the original, this version is just another rehash of the classic, but for new-comers or those who are looking for a good, old-fashioned scare, then there is plenty of meat on this table.
Ebert & Roeper
Richard Roeper
... a bloody good time of a B-movie.
MovieFreak.com
Sara Michelle Fetters
While lacking the kinetic intensity of its predecessor, this incarnation of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre gets the job done.
Austin Chronicle
Marc Savlov
While it's far from bad, it also falls far short of the icy frissons produced by the original.
Village Voice
Michael Atkinson
An overproduced, video-director remake, slick and grue-marinated and loud as a sonic boom.
Washington Post
Richard Harrington
Weakens, dilutes, disinfects and otherwise undermines the legacy of Tobe Hooper's 1974 original.
Washington Post
Stephen Hunter
You realize how hard this is on me, to have to tell you what a superb job director Marcus Nispel has done re-creating, yet also revising, 1974's grisly, gristly, protein-centric masterpiece.
Seattle Times
Ted Fry
Mainly it's a vapid, vicious thrill ride that washes away immediately.
San Francisco Chronicle
Peter Hartlaub
Unlike movies such as Seven, there isn't enough style in the new The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to justify the bloodbath, and it's riddled with too much been-there-done-that to endure as a classic.
New York Post
Lou Lumenick
A splatterfest remake that relentlessly assaults the senses and mind with no discernable redeeming social value.
Detroit Free Press
Terry Lawson
It is nearly as tense and nasty as the original and, to be fair, features far better acting, most notably by Jessica Biel, who is compelling even when she isn't about to burst out of her wet T-shirt.
Boston Globe
Wesley Morris
This is easily the most gruesome, most pointless, episode of Scooby Doo ever.
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert
A contemptible film: Vile, ugly and brutal.
New York Daily News
Jack Mathews
For the new generation of slasher fan, the remake is a true gross-out with plenty of satisfying frights. For the rest of us, it's one more chapter in a neverending story.
Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com
Scott Von Doviak
A well-oiled suspense machine.
