For the first third of the movie, it's easy to believe that you're watching an inspired, tongue-firmly-in-cheek spin on the feminist fever dream from the 1970s it remakes. With its star-studded cast, this Frank Oz-directed film seems prepared to make this into the most meta satire you've ever seen. After all, every single person watching knows the Big Plot Reveal going into the picture! But then the rest of the movie happens, and it becomes clear that instead of winking at the screwy source material, it was trying to...make it relevant for a "Modern Audience"??! What could have been a cult favorite farce in the more confident hands of a Paul Verhoeven, instead degenerates into a historically hot mess of a movie.

This remake is an absolute cinematic disaster. It is a brain-meltingly stupid mess with a constantly confused plot that switches between wives being literal robots or having brain chips. The story is lazy, the pacing is a disaster, and the social commentary is so heavy-handed it feels insulting. Despite a big-name cast, the characters are bland and unlikable. It fails as a thriller and as satire. Do yourself a favor and skip this garbage, it will hurt your soul.

An okay remake that never quite reaches its full potential. As a Nicole Kidman fan I wanted to love it more, but it ended up feeling a bit meh overall. That said, Glenn Close is an absolute standout and worth watching every time she’s on screen. Not terrible, not amazing, just one I revisit mainly for Glenn.
