  • Classic suspense. Dorothy McGuire is great, communicating with 5 or 6 words.

Okay this is the second film to make me want to try ether. Starting to think it’s a “me” problem Love the shadowplay that older ~spooky~ films would constantly employ. BRING IT BACK Unfortunately held back by the picture/sound quality with some lulling dialogue, but still a solid 40’s thriller!

The World Has No Place for Imperfections! A Gothic Film Noir set in a moody Victorian mansion dripping in sublime atmosphere. Stunning back and white cinematography creating dancing shadows that add Hitchcockian suspense with peering eyes from the within the darkness. Pacing is a bit slow, but there’s a lot to enjoy here for horror fans with the films emphasis on a deranged killer; quite the precursor to the later giallo and slasher films of the '70s and '80s.

A beautifully shot thriller about a serial killer with a fetish who is on the loose in the area. At times, the shots look like they’re from a gothic horror film.

A 1940’s whodunnit with some pre-giallo slasher vibes. I love the camera work and staging of older films. Some of the shots and angles are so creative. It is the 40’s though so this film is devoid of any depictions of violence or blood. All of the kills happen off-screen or completely obscured within the frame. Also, with the killer apparently preying in women with “afflictions” of some sort, we get some very dated attitudes about women, medicine, et al, but nothing a little nip of Brandy won’t help you to overlook. I actually really liked the killer reveal, because I had not actually pieced everything together by that point. Really enjoyable.

Some excellent cinematography. A very interesting start where an audience watches a silent film. The heroine is mute and the silent film vibes carry on throughout this film. Very atmospheric and creepy on occasion, but never particularly scary. Plotty. An interesting collision of psychoanalytic ideas occurring in an early 20th Century haunted house. Ending pretyt good.
