Chronicles the experiences of a formerly successful banker as a prisoner in the gloomy jailhouse of Shawshank after being found guilty of a crime he did not commit. The film portrays the man's unique way of dealing with his new, torturous life; along the way he befriends a number of fellow prisoners, most notably a wise long-term inmate named Red.

A simple yet effective story that manages to touch anyone who ever sees it. At worst, you'll only like it — but odds are, you'll probably love it.

An all-time classic and without a doubt one of the greatest films ever made!

There are movies you watch. And then there are movies that quietly move in, rearrange your emotional furniture and never leave. Shawshank is the latter. This isn't just prison drama, it's a slow burn symphony of hope, grit and Morgan Freeman’s voice gently narrating your soul back to life. Tim Robbins plays Andy with a kind of quiet rebellion that feels almost Dutch: calm, clever and absolutely unwilling to let the system define him. Red? He’s the friend we all wish we had in dark times, wise, weary and just waiting for a reason to believe again. Watched it first on a fuzzy late night broadcast, then wore out the VHS and now it lives in my Plex like a sacred relic. Every rewatch feels like catching up with old friends who remind you that freedom isn’t just a place, it’s a mindset. If you’ve ever felt trapped by circumstance, this film hands you a rock hammer and says, “Start digging.” Absolute cinema. No notes.

It's rare to watch a film that's been called one of the greatest ever made and feel like it actually lives up to the impossible expectations built around it. The Shawshank Redemption came remarkably close. Frank Darabont never rushes through the years these men spend behind prison walls. He gives them room to become familiar, and somewhere along the way their routines, friendships, and disappointments begin to matter almost without you noticing. By the time the story reaches its defining moments, you realize you've been emotionally invested for far longer than you thought. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman deserve enormous credit for that. Neither performance reaches for attention, yet together they create one of the most believable friendships I've seen in a film. Equally as impressive is how many different ideas the film manages to explore without ever calling attention to them. Nothing feels like a speech or a lesson. They simply emerge from watching these men live their lives, and that's exactly why they carry so much weight. The only thing that kept this from becoming the second ever film I've ever given a perfect score was its pacing. For a story that unfolds across decades, there were a handful of stretches where I found myself wishing it would move just a little faster, and I honestly think trimming ten or fifteen minutes would have made an extraordinary film even stronger. That's an incredibly small criticism against everything else it accomplishes. More than anything, I walked away wishing I hadn't waited nearly thirty years to watch it. Popular culture had already introduced me to so much of The Shawshank Redemption that some of its most famous moments inevitably arrived with less surprise than they deserved. Even so, the film still left me asking how many other classics spend decades building an almost impossible reputation, only to earn every bit of it once you finally sit down and watch them.

An all time classic, if you have the chance to watch the 4K HDR version its restoration is outstanding much better than the Blu-ray & DVD versions. The whole thing is epic from start to finish, I was originally going to rate this a 4.5 stars but when thinking about why was I deducting half a star I couldn't find an answer hence the now 5 star rating

Yeah it's a good story, but the best movie ever made, I don't think so. Well worth watching for the story and the acting though.

The movie deserves its place as one of the greatest movies of all time, amazing acting and storytelling with lessons of the harsh truth of reality that viewers will learn to realise of the world. Absolute cinema.

Wouldn't believe a story about a prison would turn out to be one of the best movies of all time.

Very good movie. I saw the robot chicken parody first. Also can’t believe how MR. Krabs was abusing prisoners
