A rather surprising film in terms of both subject matter and style, considering it is a Bergman. Nice cinematography, stylish set design, but weak, clichéd dialogue; the acting is also surprisingly poor, despite a strong cast (a very weak Carradine). It must be said, however, that this unsophisticated, gritty and blunt style of direction effectively captures the hopelessness and pessimism of Germany at that time, and as a result, the film does not leave the viewer indifferent.
