My quick rating - 6.0/10. I remember hearing about The Pack way back when Cujo came out, but I had never seen it. I actually forgot about it until it popped up. The underlying theme here clearly highlights the mistreatment of domestic pets. The story involves a pack of dogs that have herded together to attack the homeowners on a tourist island. Where the dogs came from is the statement they were trying to make, since they were just discarded animals from the visitors. I admittedly didn't recognize any of the actors, although I will point out Joe Don Baker did fine as the main protagonist who realizes the threat of the animals terrorizing people, while also understanding it isn't the dog's fault. Some of the other actors do ham it up a bit too much, which is slightly distracting from the more serious nature of the film. Writer/director Robert Clouse (Enter the Dragon) does a fine job of managing the tension with the animals attacking. A few of the scenes were most likely quite terrifying for the time. The story itself is very predictable in what is going to occur, yet still manages to be quite exciting, mainly thanks to our canine stars. The atmosphere on the island is fitting for this nature-against-humanity thriller that still packs a punch.
Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews
Dennis Schwartz
Though it reminds one of the Hitchcock classic The Birds (1963), it's not as good or as scary.
Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)
John Beifuss
Becomes a metaphorical gang film, demonstrating how unloved and unwanted children (or dogs) may turn to their peers for support, and to crime (eating people, for example) to survive on the streets (or in the woods).
