The Munsters Ratings & Reviews

This film occupies a very strange space. Figuring out how that will be received by audiences is a bit similar to the effectiveness of glass coffins—remains to be seen. This is a 100 percent earnest tribute/reboot/remake(?) of the 1964 TV show of the same name. In a way this plays like the Pilot Episode of that series. It feels authentically like that 1960’s TV with campy (and I mean CAMPY) performances and humor. The care and dedication put into this is plainly seen. The production values, costume design, sets and lighting all look fantastic. I remember watching The Munsters tv show as a kid when it was in syndication—not because I liked it, but because we only had 5 channels (and 4 of those were News). So I don’t have a ton of nostalgia for that series. If you do, this really might hit the spot. When I say this occupies a weird space, it’s because it feels like a TV show, has the runtime of a movie (too long of a movie), has the story of a pilot episode, has PG (maybe even G) rated campy humor (dad jokes galore), yet is directed by Rob Zombie. Though The Munsters is still not for me (I have way more than 5 channels now), I couldn’t help but be impressed by Rob Zombie’s dedication to the IP. So if you have a soft spot for The Munsters, you really might enjoy this heartfelt recreation. (note: yes, that trailer was fkn awful. But at the same time, it might be the only reason I even decided to watch this. So, maybe it was a good trailer? 🤔)

Packs substantial hilarity because it surrenders to the silliness of the concept without including anachronisms or attempts at sophistication.

Though writer-director Zombie was admittedly trying to emulate the kitschy charm of the original show, this cheese stinks.

Rob Zombie's mismanagement of nostalgia and modern expectations leaves us with a half-baked attempt that was brimming with great potential.

The Munsters hews fairly close to the spirit of the show it's inspired by, but more than likely will only appeal to die hard fans.

Highly stylized with plenty of neon lights and camp comedy, The Munsters provides a stronger aesthetic than it does substance.

The Munsters is a goofy love letter to the original series, a surprisingly colorful and endearingly silly entry in Rob Zombie's film library.

It's definitely made for kids, but I don't don't see kids laughing at the jokes in here.

The Munsters is admirably committed to its vision, but it's a little hard to say who it's really for.

It wears its still-beating heart on its PG sleeve, with nary a curse word or disembowelment in sight. It tries so hard to capture the innocence of the original that it's a shame that it's not good. And I mean not any good at all. Nothing works.

Prequel tries hard, but nearly every step in this nostalgia-fest goes wrong.
Knotfest
Nicolás Delgadillo
A colorful and playful throwback that's genuinely funny and endlessly impressive with its Halloweentown style aesthetic and designs.

"The Munsters," the family-of-ghouls '60s sitcom that Zombie is adapting, was such a ticky-tacky piece of gothic bat-house surrealism that the movie, broad and slovenly as it is, works more than it doesn't.
Double Toasted

I respect Rob Zombie for his sincerity in making this. You can really tell he's having fun and his heart is in it. However, Zombie tries several different types of comedy and fails at all of them.

[T]here's nothing under all the layers of ghoulish makeup and costumes.
San Jose Mercury News

There's a hint of a decent origin story here but it all crumbles like a vampire at daybreak.
The Film Stage

This is a wholly personal use of IP that almost comes off like Zombie re-telling the story of him and his wife Sheri falling in love through the spectrum of film monsters.
Bloody Disgusting
Meagan Navarro
While his choices here fascinate as often as they clash with one another, Zombie's struggle to reconcile his vision with the source material results in a perplexing, failed experiment that quickly overstays its welcome.
RogerEbert.com
Scout Tafoya
A completely innocent, at times screamingly funny movie that's mostly about an idealized world made of '60s cultural icons.
TheWrap
William Bibbiani
Zombie just seems to want to live in a peacefully eccentric world, where creatures can party down and suck some blood without having to worry about any of the normies bothering them. The appeal is understandable, but it doesn't make for much of a movie.
