The Marvels Ratings & Reviews
- VarunOctober 19, 2024This movie is all over the place in the worst way possible. I thought it started really well, I enjoyed the accidental teleportation and how the characters are introduced to each other and deal with their predicament. I was really digging the CGI too, I could feel the scope of the space scenes, the cats were realistic, and a lot of things felt tangible. Aladna was breathtaking to look at, it was like a fantasy coastal city from Europe and the costume design for the inhabitants was really cool. Kamala Khan has an amazing infectious energy and brought lots of fun to many scenes. This is where my praises end. The script is super messy, you can clearly tell there were multiple rewrites and reshoots that’s just badly put together. Monica was so flat and boring, for majority of the movie she’s just moping about Aunt Carol leaving her and she brings zero energy to the trio. Captain Marvel did have more personality compared to the first movie, because here she has to deal with different emotions, but even this didn’t go very far in any direction. Brie Larson is a good actress but there’s not much she can do when Marvel has zero idea what to do with the character or the tone they want to set. There’s also so much past exposition about things we already know, Marvel isn’t interested in building up the characters in the present moment. The villain was another weak caricature and the actress was corny as hell. Also I couldn’t stand Kamala’s mom’s accent in the show or this film, I find it super cringe and she makes every joke unfunny. Why did they decide to turn the Aladna section into a musical??? It makes zero tonal sense and I didn’t laugh or smile once. The Prince seemed interesting but he barely gets like 5 mins of screen time and it looks like Marvel just wanted to market him to the Korean fans. Nick Fury is a comedian in this film, every single line of his is setting up a joke or gag. Also I’m a cat dad, so I enjoyed the Flerken scene because it was visually fun and comedic and works great as an idea to save everyone, however the set up isn’t organic or rational and feels like it’s just another gag pushed into the movie for marketing purposes. I also don’t get why they’re making a big deal about the director, she has no critically acclaimed hits and her Candyman movie was awful. Marvel studios seriously has no idea what they’re doing, their latest movies and shows have been complete disasters with god awful writing. I feel like I’m just watching childish soap dramas at this point. I hope to see Kamala in future projects, she was the only breath of fresh air the entire runtime, but even she couldn’t be a saving grace for this mess of a film.
- M08YJuly 17, 2025The Marvels is complete garbage BUT it does have the good graces to be lighthearted and breezy at a slick 1h45m. Iman Vellani is a joy to watch on screen and you can tell she is genuinely having a great time. Even Brie Larson seems to have loosened up a bit to make her latest Marvel outing a little more enjoyable. This movie contains none of the preachy gender politics and obnoxious girlbossing of the previous movie making it a much more enjoyable experience.
- Dellvon C. FordFebruary 2, 2025For a Marvel movie....this was a good time.....the storyline was interesting...casting was perfect.....effects were top knotch....and of course cinematography was razor sharp......Its filled.with strong women energy...and it hits hard...So expect a little mushiness..but it's managable.....A.great popcorn movie with the family...
- Andy KingJuly 7, 2025Not a bad adventure story, but I feel like you need to have watched A LOT of other Marvel shows and movies to get the most out of this one (or else just be prepared to Google a lot of plot points)
- DoggesAndCattesApril 5, 2025Not really my favorite Marvel movie, and frankly, I have enjoyed very few since Avengers End Game. Despite this, The Marvels is still a solid watch though I'm glad I didn't pay to go see it in theaters. The cast and characters are great but the narrative and story was very weak. It seems the story only serves to push audiences to watch the next movie. The completed story doesn't seem rewarding, but that just might be the nature of comics that the good guys triump over evil. Captain Marvel and the rest of The Marvels deserve something more fulfilling and makes their characters grow and - despite being a fantasy - seem real. However, my expectations are always low for comic book movies/superhero movies, so it was just a fun adventure to turn off your mind and enjoy.
- Spaceman JoeJuly 6, 2025Pretty much the most boring, useless movie ever
- Steven AndersonMarch 29, 2025I could have gone without ever having seen this. I wish these Marvel movies were not getting so corny.
- jackmeatJuly 2, 2025My quick rating - 5.5/10. I haven't heard great things about this one but that won't stop me from watching. The Marvels brings together a formidable trio: Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), as they face the consequences of a destabilized universe. While the premise is promising, the execution falls short in several aspects. There is one thing you will notice right away that Marvel is doing RIGHT that the DC universe is totally screwing up. They are keeping the same current actors to play their roles on both small and big screens (Vellani). The Marvels starts with Carol reclaiming her identity from the Kree and seeking revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. However, unintended consequences led her to shoulder the burden of a universe in chaos. When a wormhole connects her with Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, they must join forces to save the day. Despite its potential, the movie struggles with cringeworthy scenes and a forced attempt at appealing to a different audience. Jump roping and a musical number feel out of place and distract from the overall story they were attempting to deliver. Additionally, lazy writing towards the end undermines the story's integrity. One glaring issue is the lack of explanation for the villain's power, which left me puzzled about their capabilities. Not to mention the fact that there is no explanation as to why the villain (Zawe Ashton) with one bangle is so damn powerful unless Ms. Marvel could just kick Captain Marvel's ass with ease. This inconsistency, coupled with others throughout the film, detracts from the overall experience. There are more inconsistencies I noticed, but I don't want to spoil any more than I may already have. While it may not live up to expectations, it still offers entertaining moments and showcases the strength of its diverse cast. Fans of the Marvel universe may find enjoyment in seeing beloved characters unite, but be prepared for some disappointments along the way. And don't expect much along the lines of the "phase" overall strategy and direction, since it is pretty devoid of that.
- WilliamOctober 27, 2024Atrocious.
- Kevin WardJuly 2, 2025The heart of the film, the relationships between Carol, Monica and Kamala is where the film excels. Brie Larson, Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris chemistry together works extremely well and it certainly helps to mask over some of the bad writing. There is some bad writing though. I don’t even necessarily fault the writers. I sort of feel like the MCU has become an increasingly difficult sandbox to play in as a result of some of the films and tv series we’ve had up to this point. Silliness and stakes have been escalated to the point where nothing is too silly to include; and the destruction of entire worlds don’t seem to hold any emotional weight. And I can’t seem to keep them all straight anymore. The stories feel hollow and without consequence even if I enjoy the time spent with the characters. I really liked the switching places aspect and the manner in which it really forces the trio to come together and work as a team, but it really seemed super inconsistent as to when it would trigger a switch and with whom. I personally could have done without the singing planet segment and the overdone Flerken usage. Thankfully it didn’t come off as silly as Thor: Love and Thunder or Quantumania, so... a slight step back in the right direction for Marvel. It’s a great mid credit scene, too.
- wf625June 30, 2025Marvel keeps dropping a good movie then a bad movie this is one of the bad movies
- ClaudeAJune 28, 2025Why was this movie even made... Teenager confused musical bland marvel movie... Complete waste of time..
- pwalt54June 21, 2025By far one of the dumbest moives ever made. Kevin Fergie just needs to give it up he shot his wad on The Avengers Trilogy. Every offering since Endgame is horrble
- Isaac CastellanosMay 24, 2025Fun movie. Captain Marvel isn’t insufferable in this movie like she is in every other Marvel production. Kamala Khan and Photon are strong supporting roles that help share the burden of carrying this movie. I just rewatched Ms Marvel prior to viewing The Marvels. It’s not necessary, but definitely makes you care more about the Khan family dynamic and to care for Kamala’s origin story.
- DJApril 20, 2025Honestly I loved this movie! Can't wait for the next one!
